AN EXTREMELY RARE LATE 17TH CENTURY SPANISH OR PORTUGUESE BULBOUS SHAPED "PEWTER" CAPSTAN CANDLESTICK IN NEAR PERFECT CONDITION AND OLD COLOR IN A VERY RARE LARGE SIZE. THESE VERY RARE CANDLESTICKS RARELY COME ONTO THE MARKET. WE SEE THE MORE COMMON BRASS EXAMPLES BUT THE PEWTER EXAMPLES DID NOT SURVIVE.
MANY WERE MELTED DOWN IN THE 18TH CENTURY TO MAKE NEWER PEWTER PIECES. This is THE ABSOLUTE BEST 17TH CENTURY stick and would make a great addition to any early collection. Made in the typical 17th Century manner the underneath color is absolutely untouched with the cast marks still present. The condition is WONDERFUL, just the minor dings and surface abrasions you would expect from over 300 years of use. ALSO, NO DENTS IN THE BASE.THIS IS ABOUT THE CLEANEST EXAMPLE YOU WILL EVER FIND. IT ALSO DOES NOT HAVE THE old denting and bruising we USUALLY see in these early pewter examples.
