Antique 19th c. Old Mystery European Impressionist Oil Painting, Signed WOW

  
This is an interesting and well-done Antique 19th c. Old Mystery European Impressionist Oil Painting on canvas, likely dating to the late 19th - early 20th c. This work depicts a sleepy European cityscape scene in the twilight hours of the night, with church steeples, arched roofs and several shadowy figures near the archway of an old city wall.

This work is signed illegibly in the lower right corner, perhaps you recognize the artist or their work? This painting is strongly reminiscent of early Vincent Van Gogh cityscapes and is a wonderful example of pure European Impressionism in its most classical form. I have a suspicion that the artist of this work is somebody known, and possibly famous.

The canvas appears very cold, and is mounted to the stretcher with old, irregular blacksmithed flathead nails, which also date this painting to the turn of the century. The stretcher bars appear from a later era, and it is likely that this artwork was re-stretched on more contemporary stretcher bars at some point in its history. Good - Fair condition for age, with mild stabilized craquelure throughout, and areas of mild paint loss in some areas. The paint loss is stabilized, and not actively flaking. A restoration of this piece would be beneficial for optimal display purposes, but it looks lovely as is.

Approximately 16 1/4 x 20 inches. This is a lovely European Impressionist painting "from the period" and the original movement and would look lovely in any setting. Please check out my other listings for more wonderful and unique artworks!
