Amazing Antique 19th c. Old Master Oil Painting, Nude Venus & Cupid, Signed

  
This is an absolutely stunning and Amazing Antique 19th c. Old Master Oil Painting on canvas, depicting the Nude Venus surrounded by Cupid and Cherubs. This work is signed and dated: E. Leonard 1907 in the lower right corner. I could not find much information on this painter, but perhaps you know more about the artist? This work depicts winged cherubs encircling a reclining nude Venus, who divinely floats above the calm ocean waves. The cherubs gaze upon her with curiosity and wonder, and several of them blow on purple conch shells in a joyous and spontaneous scene of revelry.

The central figure is Venus, who coyly gazed at her admirers from under her raised arm. This is a beautiful and attention grabbing painting.

Based on my own knowledge and research, this is an American painting (based on the stretcher bars), and was likely something that hung in an Old West saloon or brothel at the turn of the century. A work like this would have been the centerpiece and focus of attention at such an establishment, as nearly any saloon or brothel worth its salt had an impressive nude oil painting hanging in their establishment. Now getting to the frame... This work is housed in a Magnificent old 19th century Rococo gilded frame, which is likely European in origin based on its refinement. The frame is hand carved in a heavy and dense wood, and is chased with finely detailed floral and shell motifs.

Good condition for age and use. The canvas has some areas minor paint loss, light creasing and one small tear in the upper left. The frame exhibits edge wear, gilding loss, gesso and ornamentation loss, and certain areas are loose and Very Fragile. Please look carefully at the photos, as one corner of the frame has several fissures. There is nothing that I can do about this.

Any damage during transit to the frame is irrelevant because that is not what was paid for. You are only paying for the painted canvas painting. Approximately 34 x 44 inches including frame. Actual artwork is approximately 20 x 30 inches.
