OLD LEADED STAINED GLASS CHURCH WINDOW "Franz Mayer" signed 10'6" x 6'6". This old Stained Glass window is from an English Church. It was made and signed by Franz Mayer of Munich in the very early part of the 20th Century.
The inscription on the bottom reads PRAY FOR THE DONOR A. MOTHER MARY ALOYSIUS O'CONNELL WHO DIED ON DEC. 31st 1888 AND OF MARGARET HELENA O'CONNELL WHO DIED DEC. 19th 1894 It is signed MAYER & CO MUNICH. 6 of the panels are approx 20" x 33" the bottom 3 are approx 20" x 13".
This window has had the top amber glass added to square it off, but this could easily be removed. It has been made into a light box for optimum display, and can easily be separated into 3 pieces. We have found this history about them. The Stained glass windows were originally used in the St Bedes Convent Chapel, they were donated to Mother Superior Aloysius of the Sisters of Mercy (Superior for 36 years) by the people of Sunderland. On the closure of the St Bedes Convent the glass was brought to Oaklea Convent on the corner of Thornhill Terrace, this however coincided with WW2 so the glass was hidden in the cellar behind false walls for protection. The glass remained hidden in the cellar and forgotten until 1992 when the community were preparing for their 150 years celebration to be held in 1993, only then did an old sister remember their whereabouts. Some of the windows were then mounted on the staircase of Oaklea convent and some of the smaller pieces used in the new Chapel of St Anthonys Girls Catholic Academy. The frame is a new frame that we have added.
