Alvah Bradish was born in Sherburne, New York, in 1806 and his family moved to Fredonia, Chautauqua County, New York in the 1810s, following his father's death. Alvah became a well-known American portrait painter in the mid/late 1830s, and was based in Rochester, NY. He moved to the Detroit, Michigan area in 1850, and spent most of the rest of his life there.

Most of his subjects lived in New York and Michigan, and he created approximately five hundred portraits in his career. This is one of them, and was painted in 1873.

He continued to paint well into the 1880s, and he died in Detroit on 19 April 1901. This portrait of an unknown woman is in an oval frame, which measures approximately 21 1/2" x 25" in size.

I'm calling it Portrait of an Old Woman. The woman in question is wearing a black dress, earrings, and an oval-shaped gold collar pin. Bradish, 1873 on the reverse. The piece could be professionally restored, or it could be displayed as-is.
