This is a wonderful and remarkably detailed Incredible Fine Antique Old 19th c. Most unusual of all, is that this piece has a mechanism on the verso, which would have been able to control the direction of the sails, at one time. The sails may have been able to move independently by the force of the winds, similar to a whirligig.
Even more fascinating, is that this piece is signed by the artist, with a stamped signature at the lower edge which reads: B. I could not find any information on this artist, but perhaps you know more about them or his work? Approximately 30 1/2 inches wide x 22 1/2 inches tall x 7 inches deep.
This artwork was acquired in Southern California, but I suspect that it originated from the Northeastern United States. This early piece of Americana is a museum worthy specimen, and one that probably deserves to be on public display and under glass somewhere in New England.Very good condition for over a century of age, with an honest old patina of verdigris and oxidation from decades of exposure to the elements. This is the without a doubt the best weathervane I have ever had the opportunity to own. If you like what you see, I encourage you to make an Offer.
