Antique 100 Year Old Signed Japanese Tool Forged Iron Maebiki Nokogiri Saw

  

This antique Japanese saw or nokogiri was made. By the famous Japanese master blade maker. It is a professional grade timber saw and has various inscriptions (see pictures 4, 5, 9, & 11 enlarged). It is the type of timber saw used in woodworking and Japanese carpentry that cuts on the pull stroke, unlike European saws which cut on the push stroke. This allows it to have.

A thinner blade that cuts more efficiently and leaves a narrower cut width (kerf)(see picture 9). Made of a high quality. Carbon steel and carefully milled by hand by the Japanese master blade maker.

Dark aged patina, with the exception of a few shortened teeth see pictures 6 & 7. Throughout, as seen in the enlarged pictures. Most teeth are complete and still in sharp condition.

A rare piece of character and quality from a century past. The thickness of this blade helped to create a straight "rip" cut either cross cut or down the length of a log. This type of saw required an especially powerful kobiki-shokunin (sawyer) as seen in the 1830's Hokusai woodblock print in the last picture (not included). Measures 39 1/4 overall (99.5 cm).
