An Old Illuminated Miniature Koran with Fine Calligraphy, Signed and Dated 1856 AD. The definition of a miniature book is that it must be less than 7.5 cm (3 inches) on both sides. Miniature manuscript Korans are extremely rare. The present miniature Koran almost fit the definition.

Size of written page: 1.65 x 2.87 inches (4.2 x 7.3 cm). Size of cover 2.75 x 4.33 inches (7 x 11 cm). It has 174 leaves (348 page). The text is written in tiny, handsome, and elegant ghubar (dust like) script in black ink, on beige paper; with chapter headings in red ink, on gold strips ornamented with other colors; 21 lines to a page. All pages are ruled in several lines of gold and blue.

There are two beautifully illuminated pages in the beginning of the Koran. The Arabic text is vocalized throughout. All verses are separated by small gold discs.

The divisions of the Koran are indicated by medallions on the margin in gold and blue. There are tens of such medallions. The usual du`a al-khatm (prayer for completing the text) is present at the end of the Koran. It is written by Mulla Ali Asghar al-Gorji in the year 1273 of the Islamic calendar, corresponding to 1856 AD.

The name of the calligrapher al-Gorji indicates that he was from Georgia in the Caucuses, where there is a substantial Muslim community. Originally, the manuscript had lacquer cover and leather spine, but the spine deteriorated and replaced by cloth binding with the original lacquer cover with colorful and beautiful floral design laid down. The Koran is in superb condition a few leaves were repaired without loss of text.
